Verbal Eviction Threats are Invalid

Did your landlord give you an eviction notice? Are you wondering if it is legal?

Many eviction notices are not legal and they don’t mean that you have to leave your home as soon as you receive one. All eviction notices have to be written and properly served to you. Also, landlords have to go through the court process to evict tenants, and tenants have the right to fight the case.  If you are a tenant, landlords cannot simply change the locks or tell you that you have to leave.  That is not a legal eviction.

For example, if you are a tenant and a landlord tells you that you have to move out because the landlord wants to sell their home, that does NOT mean that you have to move out. If you do NOT want to move out, you should NOT move out until you get advice from an attorney about your options.

If you receive a verbal eviction threat from your landlord, or a written eviction notice, or your landlord wants you to sign an agreement and you are not sure if you should sign it, please contact a legal services provider to apply for assistance and advice about your options BEFORE you sign anything.
